The Government has announced they are introducing rewards for public sector canteens that provide nutritious food and encourage healthier eating.
As part of a government report looking at food and food policy, a ‘Healthier Food Mark’ will be awarded to catering companies that serve the public sector if they provide nutritionally balanced menus and source low fat and environmentally sustainable food.
The mark will be piloted in the NHS, HM Prison Service and central government staff canteens.
Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said: "Our ultimate aim is for healthy food to be the norm across England. The public sector have a duty to look after their staff and people in their direct care, such as patients and prisoners, so it’s essential we serve up healthy and nutritious food."
Food Matters: Towards a Strategy for the 21st Century, published this week, reviews main trends in food production and consumption. The report sets out a food policy strategy and practical measures for addressing issues such as how food safety and nutrition impact on the health of people in the UK.
Maintaining a healthy diet is an important part of daily life. Eating well helps staff to maintain their fitness and energy levels and to remain focused at work.
